Memorable road trip stories
Many BC highways wind through long stretches of mountainous terrain, where there are signs reminding motorists to watch for falling rock. The mountainside in the icon on the sign is triangular, with pieces falling off the side. Our seven-year-old once saw it and yelled, "Oh look, there's a pizza shop up ahead!" To this day, though our kids are in their 30s, whenever we see that sign on a highway, someone says "Oh look, pizza!" Joy B.
Last December we went to Cuba to celebrate my in-laws’ 40th wedding anniversary. Our five-year-old son sat by the window in the airplane. He watched in amazement as the skyscrapers of Vancouver disappeared and we flew above the clouds. He suddenly turned to me with a precious look in his eyes and asked, "Hey, so are we gonna see God up here?" Sandra V.
I was sitting at our table working on the bills and my four-year-old son was watching TV. He asked me what the show was called. I looked up and saw he was watching Highway to Heaven. So I told him the name of the show and went back to my bills. About 10 seconds had gone by when said thoughtfully, "That sounds like an interesting way to get there!" Tracy S.
On our honeymoon road trip north from California to our home in Edmonton, my new husband asked if I would take over navigating in BC. I successfully directed him to the highway that would take us over the border from BC and into Alberta. Feeling pretty confident, I excitedly indicated another highway I had spotted on the map I presumed would shave off some miles. But 20 minutes later, a "Welcome to British Columbia" sign appeared! Oops. That was my first and last time being official map reader in our 29-year marriage. Denise D.
