Humanist couple seeks ban on religious materials in schools

A Grimsby, Ontario, couple has filed a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal that they hope will prevent any religious materials from getting into the hands of local elementary schoolchildren, Canadian Press reported.

Rene and Anna Chouinard, who are self-described humanists, object that for the past 12 years, the District School Board of Niagara has allowed Gideons International in Canada to give New Testaments to grade 5 students whose parents have said they can have one.

BC asks court if polygamy ban is legal

The British Columbia government has asked the province’s Supreme Court for its opinion on whether the federal law making polygamy a crime is constitutionally valid, Canadian Press reported.

The announcement in late October by Attorney-General Michael de Jong means the province will not appeal a court ruling that threw out charges of practicing polygamy laid against Winston Blackmore and James Oler, leaders of the fundamentalist Mormon community of Bountiful in south-eastern British Columbia.

Polygamy case suffers setback

The British Columbia government has yet to decide how to respond to a court ruling that quashed polygamy charges against two leaders of the Fundamentalist Mormon community of Bountiful, the Vancouver Sun reported.

Last month, B.C. Supreme Court Judge Sunni Stromberg-Stein threw out the charges laid against Winston Blackmore and James Oler earlier this year. She agreed with them that Wally Oppal, the Attorney-General at the time, had acted improperly by “shopping” for a special prosecutor who would recommend that charges be laid.

Parents ponder appeal of ethics course ruling

A Catholic parents’ group in Drummondville, Quebec, is considering whether to appeal a judge’s ruling rejecting their bid to keep their children from being exposed to the government’s new mandatory course on ethics and religious culture, the Montreal Gazette reported.

Hutterites lose religious freedom case

Two Hutterite communities in southern Alberta are weighing their options after the Supreme Court of Canada ruled last month not to support their bid to be exempted on religious grounds from having their images on driver’s licences, the Calgary Herald reported.
