MP seeks to criminalize those who coerce women to abort
Life
Manitoba Conservative MP Rod Bruinooge wants to make it a crime in Canada for someone to try to coerce a woman into having an abortion, the National Post reported.

The Criminal Code already forbids the uttering of physical threats against pregnant women. But Bill C-510, a private member’s bill that Bruinooge introduced last month, would go further by criminalizing other forms of intimidation, such as threatening to take away her “financial support or housing” and “argumentative and rancorous badgering.”

Preschoolers and TV a bad mix: study
Culture

Parents who let young children watch too much television are jeopardizing their across-the-board development, according to a new study reported by the Montreal Gazette.

Researchers at the University of Montreal, the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Centre and the University of Michigan based their findings on interviews with the parents of 1,314 Quebec children. Parent-reported data on the amount of time children spent viewing TV at 29 and 58 months old was compared with assessments of the children’s performance in grade four. They concluded that the degree of impairment by the time the children turned 10 was both significant and far-reaching.

Parents spending more time with their kids
Family
Two recently published studies – one in the United States and the other in the United Kingdom – suggest that working parents are spending a lot more time with their children compared to previous generations.

As the New York Times reported, a study by married economists Garey and Valerie A. Ramey at the University of California, San Diego, found that the amount of time that parents at all income levels – but especially among those with postsecondary education – spent with their children had risen “dramatically” since the mid-1990s.

Life

Written by Andrea Mrozek, manager of research and communications at the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada

When Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that he would make maternal health a major initiative when Canada assumed presidency of the G8 in late June, the move garnered widespread approval. Since then, many have wondered how on earth a call for improved maternal and child health in the developing world evolved into a debate about abortion.

The following chronology outlines how the debate unfolded:

Pediatricians reject teens' same-sex attraction as "normal"
Sexuality
The American College of Pediatricians (ACP) is cautioning “well-intentioned but misinformed” high school teachers and staff across the US against being too quick to affirm students who say they are attracted to people of the same sex.

“Adolescents experience confusion about many things, including sexual orientation and gender identity, and they are particularly vulnerable to environmental influences,” the Florida-based ACP wrote in a letter to every school superintendent in the country.
