BC asks court if polygamy ban is legal

The British Columbia government has asked the province’s Supreme Court for its opinion on whether the federal law making polygamy a crime is constitutionally valid, Canadian Press reported.

The announcement in late October by Attorney-General Michael de Jong means the province will not appeal a court ruling that threw out charges of practicing polygamy laid against Winston Blackmore and James Oler, leaders of the fundamentalist Mormon community of Bountiful in south-eastern British Columbia.

No TV for toddlers, paediatricians urge

Canada’s paediatricians will soon be urging parents never to let children under two watch any amount of television, the Montreal Gazette reported.

The new policy, which the Canadian Paediatric Society is expected to unveil shortly, will amend the current policy that recommends children of all ages be limited to no more than two hours of TV-viewing a day.

Commons passes child trafficking bill

A proposed law that would send people convicted of trafficking in children under 18 to prison for no less than five years seems likely now to become law. On September 30, MPs voted 239-46 to approve private member’s bill C-268 on third and final reading.

On September 28, 2009, the Conference Board of Canada released its annual report entitled How Canada Performs: A Report Card on Canada. The report showed that Canada has a high rate of infant mortality. In fact, according to the report, “Canada gets a ‘C’ and now ties the U.K. for 15th place out of 17 peer countries. Its infant mortality rate is shockingly high for a country at Canada’s level of socio-economic development.” The Conference Board study found that not only is Canada’s infant mortality rate high, it is persistently so, at 5 children per 1000 live births.

Delaying pregnancy heightens risk of being childless

New Statistics Canada data showing more and more women are delaying becoming first-time mothers until they are past 30 indicates women are still buying into the “lie” that they “can have it all at the time of their own choosing,” according to Calgary Herald columnist Susan Martinuk.
