Sleepy teens more likely to suffer depression
Health
Making sure teenage children get enough sleep may be one of the best ways to keep them from suffering depression, according to a study reported in London’s Daily Telegraph.

“Our results are consistent with the theory that inadequate sleep is a risk factor for depression,” said lead author Dr. James Gangwisch, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York. “Adequate quality sleep could therefore be a preventive measure against depression and a treatment for depression.”

Premature babies and low birth weight: probable causes, further questions
Health
Written by Derek Miedema, a researcher at the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada

On September 28, 2009, the Conference Board of Canada released its annual report entitled How Canada Performs: A Report Card on Canada. The report showed that Canada has a high rate of infant mortality. In fact, according to the report, “Canada gets a ‘C’ and now ties the U.K. for 15th place out of 17 peer countries. “Mature” teens given say in medical treatments
Health
The Supreme Court of Canada has told the nation’s courts that they must take into consideration the views of “mature adolescents” – teenagers under the age of 16 – in cases involving their refusal to submit to potentially life-saving medical treatments, the National Post reported.

The 6-1 ruling handed down on June 25 stresses that the “best interests of the child” remains the overriding principle in such cases. But it does require judges to take into account a minor’s intellectual capacity and his or her level of “mature, independent judgment” to decide these things for themselves.
