Canada’s teens value family and marriage

Canada’s teenagers seem more inclined toward marriage and family and less inclined toward drugs, alcohol and sex compared to past years, according to new data from University of Lethbridge sociologist Reginald Bibby.

The findings are part of Bibby’s Project Teen Canada, a periodic survey of more than 4,500 older teens. As of 2008, 71 per cent said they drank alcohol (down from 78 per cent in 2000), 22 per cent smoked (down from 37 per cent), 31 per cent used marijuana or hashish (down from 37 per cent), and 56 per cent had never had sex (up from 51 per cent).

Canadian teens long to make family life work

Remember the TV show Kids Say the Darndest Things? A new survey of more than 4,500 Canadian youth reveals that teens say the darndest things, too. Except what they’re saying isn’t so much funny as surprising: 67 per cent of teens said family life is very important to them. A large majority of teens also reported finding significant enjoyment in their relationships with parents.
