Plan for all-day kindergarten in BC leaves many perplexed

On September 1, 2009, British Columbia announced the updated budget would include $151 million for all-day kindergarten for the province’s approximately 40,000 five-year-olds, starting in 2010. The same budget announced a $2.8 billion dollar deficit and tax increases through the new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

The province is framing the move to all-day kindergarten as one that is necessarily beneficial for children. This is also true of other jurisdictions with similar plans, like Ontario, where Premier Dalton McGuinty aims to roll out full-day kindergarten, also starting in 2010.

Parental rights bill causes controversy

A government bill before the Alberta legislature would broaden the right of parents to pull their kids from classroom instruction they find objectionable, CTV News reported.

The province’s School Act already allows parents to remove their children from curricula on sexuality. Bill 44, an amendment to Alberta’s human rights law, extends that right to teachings on sexual orientation and religion.

Courses offer teens a Biblical grounding

“This is, to me, the most Biblically illiterate generation of believers I’ve ever known,” said noted Canadian-born author and preacher Henry Blackaby at a Bible conference last month in Richmond, BC. “We just don’t follow the Scriptures. We’re not immersed in the Scriptures. We’re not immersed in the ways of God and the purposes of God.”

It is a situation that some Christian leaders will be trying to change, at least when it comes to teenagers and young adults, through courses offered this summer.
